Microneedling

Stimulate your skin's natural renewal process

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatment that uses a device containing very fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries within the skin.

This stimulates the skin's natural healing response and encourages the production of collagen and elastin, which play an important role in maintaining skin structure, firmness and elasticity. Microneedling is also known as collagen induction therapy.

The treatment can be tailored to your individual skin concerns and is suitable for a range of skin types when appropriately assessed and performed.

What can microneedling help with?

Microneedling can be used to improve the appearance of a number of common skin concerns, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Enlarged pores
  • Acne scarring
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Certain types of pigmentation
  • Loss of skin firmness
  • Sun-damaged or generally tired-looking skin

It is particularly useful where the aim is to improve overall skin texture and quality rather than simply treating a single surface concern.

Microneedling is also recognised as a treatment option for acne scarring because the controlled needling process stimulates new collagen production, which can help make certain scars less noticeable over time.

Microneedling for acne scarring

Acne can leave behind changes in the skin long after active breakouts have settled. These may include uneven texture, enlarged pores and depressed acne scars.

Microneedling can be used as part of a treatment plan for certain types of acne scarring. However, not all scars are the same, and some types require a different approach.

This is why an assessment is important before treatment. I can assess your skin and the type of scarring present and advise whether microneedling is an appropriate option for you.

What happens during a microneedling treatment?

Before treatment, your skin will be assessed and prepared appropriately. The microneedling device is then passed over the treatment area in a controlled manner, with the depth and approach tailored to your skin and the area being treated.

The treatment creates tiny controlled punctures within the skin, stimulating the natural repair process.

Immediately afterwards, the skin may appear red and feel warm or sensitive, rather like mild sunburn. This is a normal response and usually settles as the skin recovers.

I will provide you with detailed aftercare advice to help support your skin while it heals.

When will I see results?

Microneedling results develop gradually because they rely on your skin's natural collagen-remodelling process.

You may notice improvements in the appearance and feel of your skin in the weeks following treatment, with results continuing to develop over time.

Depending on your concerns and the condition of your skin, a course of treatments may be recommended rather than a single session.

Your treatment plan will be discussed with you during your consultation.

Is microneedling suitable for everyone?

Microneedling is suitable for many people, but it isn't appropriate for every skin condition or circumstance.

Your skin will be assessed before treatment, and treatment may need to be postponed or avoided in certain situations, such as active skin infection or certain inflammatory skin conditions.

If you have active acne, a history of abnormal scarring or are taking certain medications, this will also be discussed as part of your consultation.
